Upper Merion Area Middle School Technology Student Association awarded NASA Summer of Innovation Grant

Upper Merion Area Middle School Technology Student Association Design and Engineering STEM Program has been awarded a NASA Summer of Innovation grant for the 2013-14 school year.  Matthew Cullen, TSA Advisor, successfully completed the online grant application for the Upper Merion Area School District program.  This is the third year the Upper Merion Area Middle School Technology and Engineering Department has received a NASA grant to support the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics initiative.

The Technology Student Association Design and Engineering STEM program will be run as an extra-curricular academic team. Student applications will be provided the first week of school. The program will be open to all students in grades 5-8 in our public, home schooled, and charter school programs with in the school district. Emphasis will be placed on recruiting underserved and underrepresented students in our learning community.

Students participating in the after school program will become members of the Upper Merion Area Middle School Technology Student Association Chapter. The students will have the opportunity to participate in local, regional, and state TSA leadership conferences. Design, Engineering, Aerospace, and Robotics competitive events will be used to drive activities and design challenges.

NASA Summer of Innovation Units will be used to introduce and teach concepts to be successful in competitive events. Hands-on lessons and activities outlined in the SoI units will provide exciting resources and structure to the after school program. The Design and Engineering Tech Lab will provide computer stations with CAD applications, productivity software, and Internet access. The students will have large group instruction in a digital classroom, team collaboration, individualized instruction, and activity time to work on design challenges. Large worktables will facilitate group collaboration and teamwork. The Design and Engineering Tech Lab tools machines, supplies, and equipment will facilitate learning and problem solving activities.

The Technology Student Association, Science Olympiad Team, and Viking Robotics Team will be on going organizations the students may participate in throughout the rest of the year and middle school career. Concepts, activities, project samples, and event photographs will be showcased on display in the Design and Engineering Lab to reinforce topics covered in regular course offerings.

Matt Cullen will be presenting a special interest session on the Summer of Innovation Program and grant writing at the Technology and Engineering Education Association of Pennsylvania State Conference in November 2013.
